Claude in Google Docs, Sheets and Slides: Setup, Edit Approval and Limits

Claude’s official Google Workspace sidebar is a public beta for paid Claude plans. Install Anthropic’s add-on to work inside an open Doc, Sheet or Slide deck, then choose how edits are approved.

Install the official add-on

  1. Check your Claude plan: Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise, plus a Google account permitted to install Marketplace apps. This is paid-plan beta access, not a free general release.
  2. Follow the official Claude Marketplace listing. Verify the developer is Anthropic; a similarly named third-party extension is a different product. One installation covers all three Google apps.
  3. Choose the Google account used for your work, review permissions, install, and reload your file. Open Extensions → Claude → Open Claude, then sign in to Claude.
  4. If installation is blocked, ask your Workspace administrator to allowlist or deploy the app. Domain/group installation is an administrator action, not something a paid Claude subscription overrides.

Choose the starting point

Already editing one file? Use the sidebar. It reads the open file and selection and edits in place. Starting in Claude? The separate Docs, Sheets and Slides connectors can create and edit Google files from chat; Drive handles search, uploads and sharing. Do not apply the sidebar’s restrictions to every connector.

Connectors require their own Google authorization. Team/Enterprise owners must enable them before members authenticate; existing Google file permissions still apply. A connector being available does not mean you have connected it. Google Workspace connector setup and limits.

Choose an approval mode before editing

Ask before edits is the default. Accept all edits skips routine edit approvals. Links, web images and access removal still require approval. Sharing, ownership changes and scheduled automations are unavailable.

Docs suggestion cards are sidebar proposals, not Google-native suggestions. Applied changes are direct edits; existing comments/suggestions cannot be managed by the sidebar. Approval and permission rules.

Our recommendation: start with a small, reversible selection and review its change before approving a wider rewrite. For collaborative work, agree who is checking the final file; an approval click does not validate a formula, a claim or a deadline.

Permissions are not a blanket Drive connection

Google permissions cover the sidebar and open-file editing. Other files require supplied references or connector access; Gmail and Calendar need separate connectors. File content is sent to Claude; edits are attributed to you in Google version history. Data and permission details.

Before using company material, check your organization’s rules for the selected account and connected services. Do not infer data retention or access policies from the word “sidebar.” For a correction, compare version history before deciding whether to undo the latest edit or restore a prior version.

Three original usage briefs — not executed tests

These fictional briefs show how to define a task and inspect its output. They are not screenshots, measured results or claims that we ran the add-on.

Docs: a change brief for Fern Studio

Use only the selected notes about our fictional kiosk launch. Write a 180-word decision brief with recommendation, unresolved questions and next actions. Keep the two supplied delivery dates exactly as written. If a date conflicts, label the conflict rather than choosing one. Propose the rewrite for review.

Check: Count the decisions retained from the notes, compare both dates character by character, and reject invented owners. A shorter document is useful only if the unresolved issue remains visible.

Sheets: a workshop budget

In this fictional budget, column B is quantity, C is unit cost and D is total cost. Explain the existing total formula before changing it. Add a variance column against the supplied budget. Treat a blank cost as unknown, not zero. Keep original input cells unchanged.

Check: For quantity 12 and unit cost 8, verify the total is 96; then inspect a blank-cost row, a negative adjustment and the final sum. Confirm formulas cover the intended rows and currency is not mixed with percentages.

Slides: a pilot decision deck

Turn the supplied fictional workshop notes into four slides: question, evidence, options and next decision. Preserve the deck theme. Use only the supplied numbers; label missing evidence. Put uncertainty beside each option instead of hiding it in speaker notes.

Check: Match each number to the notes, read every slide at presentation size and confirm that uncertainty survived the rewrite. If the underlying numbers later change, check the chart again rather than assuming it updates.

When setup or a task stalls

Use Chrome, Edge or Safari; Firefox is unsupported. Keep the sidebar open. Split operations approaching Google’s six-minute limit. The sidebar cannot create/copy other Drive files, export downloads, or hand work across Google apps. Troubleshooting and full limitations.

If the install is blocked, resolve the Workspace admin policy first. If an edit is refused, identify whether it concerns the current file, a connector authorization or a prohibited operation before retrying. For a large document, define a section-sized outcome and verify it before moving on.
