Cursor vs GitHub Copilot: Which AI Coding Assistant Is Better for You?
Check Cursor if you want an editor-centered coding workflow with its own agent and review tools. Check GitHub Copilot if you want assistance across your existing editor and GitHub workflows. Copilot also has CLI and other entry points, so this is not a comparison of a full agent against only an autocomplete plugin.

Choose with one real repository task
For a small bug fix, ask each candidate to explain the failure before editing. Then allow one focused change, inspect the diff, run the relevant test and confirm the behavior yourself. Compare how easily you can understand and reject its proposed changes. We have not run that test for this page.
If keeping your current editor and GitHub review flow matters most, begin by checking Copilot’s support for those surfaces. If you want to center the daily workflow in Cursor, check the current model and plan restrictions before migrating. These are workflow-based recommendations, not a benchmark ranking.
Do not confuse assistance with verified code
Neither tool’s generated patch is a passing test or a permission decision. Use a disposable branch, avoid pasting secrets into prompts, and review any command that installs packages, contacts a service or changes data. Cursor documents controls around agent execution; read the current settings rather than assuming every action prompts for approval. Official source
Frequently asked questions
Is GitHub Copilot only an IDE plugin?
No. GitHub describes IDE, CLI and GitHub-based workflows as well as other supported entry points. Availability varies by feature and plan. Official source
Is the lowest Cursor paid plan enough for every model?
No. The checked pricing page limits Plus to Grok models and lists separate usage billing for third-party models on eligible higher plans. Official source
Which one is better for a beginner?
Start with the tool that fits your current editor and allows you to understand a small change. Use a free allowance first, review the diff and run the result. This page does not establish a quality winner.
