Cursor iOS Remote Control: Pair Your Computer and Guide Local Agents

Direct answer

Cursor iOS Remote Control lets you inspect and message an existing local Agent from your iPhone. Sign in, choose your computer, and approve pairing in desktop Cursor. The work stays on that computer: keep it powered on, online and awake. This is an Agent conversation interface, not a remote desktop or a transfer to Cloud Agents. Cursor’s October 6 announcement.

This is a documentation-based guide, not a hands-on product test. Vendor capabilities are attributed below. Examples and verification steps are our editorial proposals; no account was connected and no product result is claimed.

Pair the iPhone with the computer

  1. Download the official Cursor iOS app through Cursor’s announcement link, then sign in to the account used on your computer. Avoid similarly named apps.
  2. Look for your computer in the app. Before pairing, check its name against the machine where the intended project is open.
  3. Tap that computer and approve the request in the Cursor desktop app. Keep access to the computer for this first approval; a phone-only attempt cannot substitute for it.
  4. Open the list of local Agents and select the one doing your task. Read its latest progress before sending a new instruction.
  5. Send a small, specific follow-up and verify it appears in that Agent’s conversation. Check the resulting file or test result before treating the task as finished.

Remote local Agent or Cloud Agent?

Choose by execution location, not screen size
QuestionRemote Control for a local AgentSeparate Cloud Agent workflow
Where is the existing work?On your own computer, in its local environment. In the cloud environment used for that cloud task.
Can I close the local laptop? Not if that stops or disconnects the local execution.A separate cloud task does not use the phone as its execution host; check its own configuration.
Do local files and credentials move?Pairing is not a migration or backup.Do not assume local uncommitted files, secrets or tools exist in the cloud environment.
What does the phone control? The selected local Agent conversation.A separately configured task with its own access and lifecycle.
Which route should I choose?Continue a task that depends on your current local setup.Evaluate cloud execution when the task can run with an explicitly prepared repository and environment.

Cursor explicitly says Remote Control does not require Cloud Agents. Cloud Agents documentation describes isolated cloud environments and separate billing. The comparison above explains execution boundaries; it does not promise cloud plan eligibility or migrate your task. Local execution boundary.

Prevent a predictable offline failure

Cursor provides Keep this computer awake in desktop Remote Control settings. Its announcement says the computer must be plugged in with the lid open. Enterprise Remote Control is disabled by default; administrators can enable it under Org settings → Security and identity → Remote control. Power and Enterprise requirements.

Before leaving, make a small end-to-end check: confirm the computer is online, open the intended Agent from the phone and read a fresh response. This proposed check is more useful than merely seeing the device name. Do not alter organization security settings to work around a policy decision.

If your task needs a local database, mounted drive or service, remember that those dependencies must also remain available. Keeping the display awake cannot repair a stopped service or expired credential.

Send a useful follow-up from a small screen

Write enough context to identify the task and its stopping point. A short message that preserves the acceptance condition is safer than a vague “continue.” The following are fictional examples, not actions we ran:

In the current branch, finish the form validation fix. Keep the existing layout. Run the related local test and report any failure. Stop before commit or deployment.
Before continuing, tell me which files you changed and whether the test is still running. Do not start a second task.

Read the Agent’s response for actual results, not just acknowledgement. If it reports a blocked dependency, decide whether that dependency can be resolved remotely or must wait until you return. Review a diff or an artifact on a larger screen when the phone view is insufficient.

A phone message does not automatically prove that a command completed, a build passed or a website was released. Keep those checkpoints distinct in your own workflow.

Diagnose the first missing step
SymptomWhat to inspectBounded recovery
Computer missingAccount identity and computer connectivity.Use the same account; check Cursor and network on the computer.
Pairing not completedDesktop confirmation still waiting?Return to the intended desktop app and inspect the request; do not accept an unknown device.
Paired but Agent absentCorrect computer and actual local Agent?Check the desktop task before starting another copy.
Connection dropped after leavingPower, sleep, lid and network.Restore connectivity and re-read progress before resending an instruction.
Enterprise control unavailableOrganization policy.Ask an administrator to confirm access; reinstalling does not override policy.
Unclear whether a command ranLatest conversation and resulting files.Inspect state before retrying work with external side effects.

These are editorial diagnostic checks, not a claim that every failure has one cause or that reconnection always resumes a task automatically.

Costs, limits and the next step

The announcement does not specify a separate Remote Control fee or a numeric allowance. Do not interpret availability as unlimited Agent execution: confirm your existing Cursor plan and usage notice. An iPhone interface also does not grant wider repository, system or organization permissions.

Good fit: checking a long local task, narrowing a requirement, or answering an Agent’s question while away from the desk. Choose a different setup: you need the machine switched off, full desktop control, or a task whose dependencies cannot stay online.

Read the Cursor product profile for the broader editor choice and the AI Agent tools guide for other execution models. Next step: pair while you still have physical access to the computer, then validate one harmless local follow-up before relying on remote access.
