What goes in and what comes out
AstaBrief 8B turns a research question and supplied or retrieved scientific excerpts into a report with citations. It generates the report from the evidence it is given; the checkpoint is not a complete literature-search engine. Ai2 model card.
Use it for a first synthesis of selected papers or as a report-writing component in a research pipeline. If you still need papers, start with the research tool guide and design the evidence-collection step separately.

Download allenai/AstaBrief_8B for your own pipeline. The model card identifies Qwen3-8B ancestry, Apache 2.0 licensing, and research/educational intended use. Follow its recommended question-and-section-reference prompt format; different formats may behave inconsistently.
The download does not provision the Asta application, search corpus, retrieval service or hosted allowance. Hardware and operating costs are separate from the weight license. We did not download or run the model. Ai2 release · Inference instructions and license.
How to use a cited draft responsibly
- Define a research question narrow enough to evaluate.
- Supply relevant excerpts with stable source identifiers and enough context to preserve each study's scope.
- Generate the report using the documented format.
- Open the original papers and check that each important claim is actually supported, with populations, methods and limitations preserved.
A visible citation is a pointer to check, not proof that a statement is correct. Missing evidence, conflicting studies and exaggerated generalizations should remain visible in your final report.
Reported results and limits
Ai2 reports faster report generation and favorable citation-focused evaluations, but frames the results as evidence about its engineering approach rather than a claim to beat all current frontier models. These are vendor-reported findings; AI Tool Finder has not reproduced the evaluation or timed hosted Fast mode. Read the methodology and limitations.
For a decision, evaluate a question for which you can judge source coverage and citation accuracy. Keep retrieval quality separate from writing quality: a fluent report cannot recover a paper that never reached the input. Research & Search tools.
