Legal software buyer guide
Best AI Legal Tools 2026: 9 Options for Research and Contract Work
This guide compares software procurement choices. A research assistant, a Word drafting assistant and a contract approval system do different jobs. Start with the legal team’s actual documents and required source coverage, then establish who verifies the result before it is used.
The short answer
Compare CoCounsel and Lexis+ with Protégé when access to a legal research corpus is central. Shortlist Spellbook, Luminance and LEGALFLY for document and contract work, and Ironclad for contract lifecycle operations. Harvey is a broader legal-AI platform; Clio spans legal work and practice management; Eve focuses on plaintiff-firm workflows. The right choice depends on jurisdiction, source access and review controls, not generic chatbot fluency.
How to use this guide
Nine products were selected for documented legal workflows, with official sources checked on October 28, 2026. We did not upload client files, evaluate privileged material or benchmark legal accuracy. The guide provides software-selection guidance, not advice on a legal matter.
Use the shortlist by task. Table order is not a performance score. Product capabilities and plan terms come from the linked official sources; suitability and buying checks are our editorial judgments. Confirm current terms before purchasing.

AI contract review: define what is being reviewed
Clause suggestions, extraction of obligations and approval routing are separate tasks. A tool may perform one well while requiring another system for the rest. Write a concrete acceptance example: identify a non-standard limitation clause, explain the relevant playbook position and propose a change that a reviewer can inspect.
Keep the original wording, the proposed redline and the reviewer’s decision together. Check numbering, defined terms, cross-references and formatting after edits. A fluent summary is not an adequate substitute for reviewing the agreement itself.
For research, inspect the authority behind the answer
Ask which jurisdiction, date range and source collection the product can access under your licence. Open the cited material and verify that it supports the proposition, applies to the problem and is current for the use you intend. Distinguish an answer generated from your uploaded documents from one supported by a licensed research collection.
Use a reviewer who understands the relevant subject and citation-checking process. Do not treat a plausible case name or a clickable reference as sufficient verification. This guide does not establish the accuracy of any product’s legal conclusions.
A procurement checklist for confidential work
- Data use: establish retention, model-training use, deletion and subprocessors in the applicable terms.
- Access: confirm user permissions, matter separation, administrative visibility and audit records.
- Location: verify the actual hosting and processing arrangements required for the engagement.
- Sources: list the licensed content and jurisdictional coverage included in the quote.
- Exit: confirm how documents, redlines and matter records can be exported.
These are questions to resolve with the vendor and responsible legal team, not certifications of the products listed here. Use approved, non-confidential test documents until the relevant safeguards and permissions are established.
Run an evaluation that reflects the real task
Prepare a small set of approved documents with expected issues identified in advance. Ask the tool to complete the same task each time, then have a qualified reviewer inspect both missed issues and incorrect suggestions. Include scanned or complex documents only if they represent the actual workload.
Record source support, reviewer correction time, document fidelity and the route for escalating uncertainty. Do not reduce the evaluation to how quickly a long answer appears. This is a proposed evaluation method; no comparative legal-accuracy results are claimed here.
How to compare quotes
Keep user seats, research-content entitlements, implementation, integrations and usage limits separate. Ask whether the quoted AI features are included in an existing licence or sold as an additional product. Establish what happens at renewal and when the team exceeds an allowance.
A Word assistant can be a smaller purchase than a firm-wide platform, while a contract repository may solve an operational problem that a drafting tool cannot. Buy the smallest workflow that meets the documented requirement, with a named reviewer responsible for the output.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best AI tool for contract review?
Compare Spellbook, Luminance and LEGALFLY for document work, and Ironclad if lifecycle management is central. Evaluate representative agreements, playbooks and reviewer controls rather than relying on a universal ranking.
Is Casetext still the right entry point for CoCounsel?
The current product is offered through Thomson Reuters. Use its current CoCounsel Legal pages to confirm the product and content entitlements.
Is Clio Duo the whole current Clio AI offering?
No. Clio’s current legal-AI pages describe a broader offering, including Clio Work and its practice-management environment. Confirm the exact product and bundle.
Can I upload confidential client documents to a free AI tool?
Use only destinations approved for the matter after reviewing the relevant permissions, contractual terms and data protections. Do not assume a public tool is an approved confidential workspace.
Can these tools replace a lawyer’s review?
This guide does not establish that. Assign qualified human review to sources, conclusions and document changes before they are used in consequential legal work.
