Commercial use terms

Separating a recording does not grant rights in its music, performance or voice.

You still need the rights required for the recording and your intended reuse.

The service does not supply rights to the uploaded recording.

Key limitation

Selecting additional stem types can increase the minutes charged.

A two-part vocal/instrumental result is different from isolating several instruments.

Audio is uploaded for server processing; drafts last 24 hours and results seven days.

Head-to-head by use case

For karaoke, the useful result is a backing track that remains usable after the vocal is removed. A stem count alone says little about residual vocals, reverb or missing instruments. Listen to an exposed section and a dense chorus, ideally using a recording you own.

For remix preparation, check whether the desired instrument is actually a separate output. ExtractStems combines the drum kit rather than promising separate kick and snare files, and it does not promise separate lead and backing vocals. A six-stem menu is not the same as access to the original session tracks.

When to pick each

Pick LALAL.AI when the recurring allowance and available separation types fit the volume of work. Selecting several stem types can affect consumption, so compare the charge for the actual job rather than converting the advertised minutes into a guessed song count.

Pick VocalRemover.org when a vocal/instrumental split is enough. Pick ExtractStems when you need its supported multi-stem outputs and prefer a one-time purchase. The checked ExtractStems free allowance is once per verified account, not an unlimited free service.

Downloads, storage and privacy

Plan the file handoff before processing. ExtractStems uploads audio to a server and offers individual downloads or a ZIP; its public workflow says drafts last 24 hours and results seven days. Download the required results within that window.

The storage terms for the other two tools were not established in this review. Check the relevant policy before uploading sensitive or unreleased audio. A browser upload interface does not mean the processing remains on your device.

How to compare sound without inventing a score

Keep the same source file, output format and listening level. Listen for vocal bleed, transient damage and phase-like artifacts in isolation, then recombine stems in your editor. Record observations alongside the downloaded files so another listener can judge the same material.

No audio files were processed for this guide, so we publish no separation-accuracy percentages or quality rankings. The comparison above concerns documented input, delivery and purchase conditions.

Frequently asked questions

Is LALAL.AI’s free result downloadable?

The checked Starter plan includes a preview allowance but not result downloads. Inspect the paid tier before relying on it for delivery.

Is VocalRemover.org unlimited?

The official page calls the tool free, but we did not verify an unlimited-use commitment or exact usage caps.

Does ExtractStems require a subscription?

No. The checked pricing page lists one-time packages and non-expiring purchased credits.

Is the audio processed locally?

ExtractStems uses a server upload workflow. Local-only processing was not verified for the other tools.

Can I publish isolated vocals from any song?

Separation does not grant rights in the recording, composition or performance. You need the permissions required for your intended use.
