Three-way avatar video comparison

HeyGen vs Synthesia vs Colossyan: Video and Training Comparison

These three tools overlap enough that a generic feature checklist can obscure the choice. Start with one concrete output: a short explainer, a recurring onboarding module or an interactive course. Then check the authoring process, review handoff and cost of delivering that output to its destination.

The short answer

Shortlist HeyGen when the priority is producing and localizing presenter videos, Synthesia when a repeatable workplace-video workspace fits the team, and Colossyan when interactive learning is central. All three now span more than one category, so verify your required feature on the actual tier. Compare a finished project, revision and export rather than declaring a winner from an entry price or homepage demo.

How to use this guide

This comparison uses official product and pricing pages checked on October 28, 2026. It does not report a hands-on rendering benchmark, measured lip-sync accuracy or learner outcomes. Workflow recommendations are editorial judgments, and introductory and annual prices are labelled separately.

Use the shortlist by task. Table order is not a performance score. Product capabilities and plan terms come from the linked official sources; suitability and buying checks are our editorial judgments. Confirm current terms before purchasing.

Choose your workflow

  1. A creator owns the whole video

Start by auditioning HeyGen with the script, brand assets and localization you expect to reuse.

  2. A team maintains recurring content

Inspect Synthesia’s editing, review and learning workflow against your actual author and learner roles.

  3. The output is an interactive course

Inspect Colossyan’s branching, quizzes and SCORM requirements, then compare the relevant tiers of the other two.

An editorial decision map: start with the output you need, then inspect the relevant shortlist.

HeyGen

Consider for: Presenter-led publishing and localization

HeyGen provides avatar-video creation, translation and automated video-production features.

Creator is $29 per month with 600 credits and 1080p export. Business lists $149 per month with 1,500 credits and includes SCORM export and LMS integrations.

Check which avatar engine and generation features your credit allowance covers. For training, inspect the Business tier rather than assuming every Creator feature includes an LMS workflow.

Synthesia

Consider for: Workplace video and learning content

Synthesia combines avatar videos with interactive learning and related workplace features on relevant plans.

Source: Synthesia product page

Starter shows $9 for the first month and then $19 per month for 1,250 monthly credits. The displayed 6,000-credit Pro option shows $49 first month, then $89 per month.

Distinguish authors, guests and learner access. Compare the credit use of video, dubbing and other enabled activities; one shared pool does not mean each activity has a separate full allowance.

Colossyan

Consider for: Presenter-led interactive courses

Colossyan supports training workflows including quizzes, branching and SCORM delivery.

Source: Colossyan product page

Starter is free. Professional is $59 per month on an annual plan and lists 30 monthly NEO minutes plus 10 monthly NEO2 minutes.

Check NEO versus NEO2 allowances and the number of SCORM exports. A trial video does not establish that the destination LMS records completion as expected.

Three prices, three different units

The entry offers above do not buy an identical output. HeyGen’s Creator and Synthesia’s Starter use credits; Colossyan’s Professional page separates allowances by engine. Annual commitments and introductory months also change the comparison.

Prepare a cost sheet for the same script, one revision and one required export. Add a second language only if it is part of your real workload. Record actual consumption during a trial instead of converting credits between vendors by guesswork. If several people work on the material, price their roles explicitly.

Compare the authoring and review loop

Give each shortlisted tool the same approved script and visual assets. Test pronunciation of brand names and specialist terms, edit a sentence, then hand the draft to the person who approves it. Check whether that reviewer needs a paid seat or can use a guest workflow.

Inspect how updates propagate: can a corrected sentence be changed without disturbing unrelated slides, subtitles and translations? How do you know which export is current? These questions often matter more to a recurring training program than a slightly different stock avatar.

This is a suggested audition. We have not run it for these vendors and therefore do not attach performance scores or “tested winner” badges.

For learning teams, test the destination

Write down whether you need a downloadable MP4, a shared link or a SCORM package. Then test the relevant output in the actual approved learning environment. Confirm completion, interactions, captions and behavior after a content update.

Do not rely on an old category stereotype: HeyGen now lists SCORM and LMS features on Business, while Synthesia’s current offering includes interactive learning features. Colossyan’s training orientation is a reason to inspect its workflow, not evidence that the others lack every learning function.

HeyGen alternatives by switching reason

If the need is structured learning content, compare Synthesia, Colossyan and Elai. If the work starts with existing footage and needs creator-focused editing, inspect Captions. For a live conversational avatar, compare the application workflow of D-ID or Tavus rather than substituting one recorded-video editor for another.

See the eight-tool avatar guide for those adjacent options and their distinct buying checks.

Synthesia alternatives by switching reason

If you need a different publishing or localization workflow, audition HeyGen using the exact assets and languages you work with. If branching courses and LMS handoff are the priority, inspect Colossyan and Elai. If the problem is cost, compare the recurring allowance and team roles before comparing promotional prices.

Changing tools will not fix an unclear script or an unowned review process. Keep the acceptance criteria the same so the decision reflects the workflow rather than novelty.

Colossyan alternatives by switching reason

If you only need a straightforward presenter video, inspect the entry publishing workflows of HeyGen and Synthesia. If a broader training workspace is important, evaluate those tools at the tier that actually includes the required learning features. If you need real-time conversation, move to a separate live-agent evaluation.

The practical next step is a controlled audition of two candidates, followed by one complete export and a reviewer sign-off. Include consent and access controls for any custom likeness before creating it.

Frequently asked questions

Is HeyGen better than Synthesia?

It depends on the publishing and team workflow. We have not run a benchmark that establishes a universal realism or quality winner. Audition the same script and inspect the required export.

Is Colossyan the only option here for SCORM?

No. HeyGen currently lists SCORM and LMS integrations on Business. Verify the exact tier and export allowance for each candidate rather than relying on an old feature comparison.

Which of the three is free?

All three advertise a free entry option, with different allowances and restrictions. Free access is not equivalent to every paid download, learning or team feature.

Is Synthesia Starter $9 per month?

The checked pricing page presents $9 for the first month, followed by $19 per month. The introductory offer should not be used as the recurring price.

Should I create separate alternatives shortlists?

Choose alternatives according to why you would switch: learning delivery, creator editing, cost or live conversation. Those are different requirements and lead to different candidates.
