AI Image Generators Without Watermarks: Free and Paid Export Rules Compared
Direct answer
A clean-looking image is only one part of a usable download. Recraft explicitly advertises free exports without a visible watermark, but its free outputs are public and not licensed for commercial use. Canva distinguishes free content from watermarked Pro assets; a generated image placed in a design does not make every other element free. Ideogram documents free JPEG downloads and paid PNG/WebP options, but we could not verify an explicit current visible-watermark guarantee. These are different purchasing decisions, not an image-quality ranking. Start with the intended use, then check the original downloaded file, its format and size, and the plan under which it was generated. Content Credentials or other provenance metadata can remain even when no logo is visible. See Recraft rights, Canva licensing and Ideogram downloads.

Choose the export contract before the generator

| Platform / best fit | Visible mark and free condition | Files / resolution boundary | Use condition / when to skip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canva | Conditional: check for Pro assets in the design. Free AI allowance is shared, not unlimited. Licence rules | PNG/JPG; advanced size and transparent export controls depend on plan. File types | Useful for a designed social asset. Skip if you need a guaranteed exclusive image or have not cleared included assets. AI terms summary |
| Recraft | Vendor advertises no-watermark free mockup exports and 30 daily generations/edits. Vendor statement | PNG/JPG/WebP and other exports in Studio; exact free raster maximum not verified. Export formats | Useful for public drafts. Free outputs are not commercially licensed; paid rights attach to images made while subscribed. Plan rights |
| Ideogram | Visible-watermark policy: UNKNOWN in the reviewed documentation. Do not count as confirmed watermark-free. | Free original-size JPEG; transparent PNG at 1K exception. PNG/WebP and download upscales require a paid plan. Download rules | Useful when the JPEG/PNG distinction decides the plan. Skip free for confidential work; free generations are public. FAQ |
Four questions that a “no watermark” badge cannot answer
1. Can you generate?
An account can be free while generation consumes a one-time grant or recurring allowance. Count failed attempts and upscales in the same budget.
2. Can you download the right file?
A preview, a JPEG, a transparent PNG and a high-resolution export are different deliverables. Specify pixels and transparency before choosing a plan.
3. Can you use it for this job?
Permission to download is not permission to sell, advertise or transfer rights. Check the output licence and any stock assets added afterwards.
4. What provenance stays with it?
A visible logo, embedded metadata and an invisible provenance signal are different things. Looking at the pixels cannot establish that all source information is absent.
What each route does and does not settle
Canva: check the whole design
Canva’s Free allowance is up to 20 Standard or Premium AI uses, shared across the relevant tools; it is not a promise of 20 finished images. Current allowance table.
Canva permits personal and commercial AI-image use subject to its terms, while leaving third-party clearance and suitability with the user. This is useful for a campaign draft; it is not an exclusivity guarantee. AI image use conditions. Free users see watermarks on Pro content; removing that restriction requires the appropriate licence or subscription. Free versus Pro content.
Our selection condition: choose this route when you need the image inside a layout and can audit every asset. Native generated-image maximum resolution and a universal C2PA policy were not established by the reviewed pages. Do not infer either from the output canvas dimensions.
Recraft: a clean draft can still fail the commercial gate
The vendor’s mockup article advertises watermark-free free exports. Its pricing FAQ says Free images belong to Recraft, are public and lack commercial rights; paid-plan images carry ownership and commercial rights after cancellation. Watermark statement · Governing plan distinction.
Our selection condition: keep free output for the permitted evaluation context, rather than assuming an upgrade retroactively licenses an earlier image. Recraft’s upscaler advertises up to 4K, but that is not a verified native resolution or free entitlement for every model. Upscaler scope. C2PA/metadata policy and per-plan raster maxima remain unknown here.
Ideogram: file type is the verified distinction
Current documentation lists 30 weekly credits for Free accounts signed in through Google, Apple or Microsoft. Plus is US$20 monthly or US$180 annually; credits are not an image count. Plans and credits.
Without a paid plan, original-size JPEG is available; transparent images can be PNG at 1K. Other PNG/WebP downloads and upscale sizes require a subscription, with credits for upscaling. The menu may offer up to 8K where it fits the image. Exact download conditions.
Our selection condition: useful when you can accept public generation and JPEG delivery, or have budgeted for the required format. Visible-watermark and provenance guarantees are unknown, so confirm a sample before a watermark-sensitive job. Commercial use remains subject to Ideogram’s terms; an export option alone does not answer the rights question.
No visible logo does not mean no source record
Adobe explains that Firefly automatically attaches Content Credentials to assets fully generated with Firefly, including Text to Image. These are tamper-evident metadata and may also be stored in its public credentials cloud. That documents provenance, not a visible-logo promise. Adobe’s Content Credentials overview.
Keep the original download and its provenance where possible. A downstream social platform may display an AI label independently of the visible pixels. This guide does not provide a method for stripping credentials or treat their absence as a quality benefit.
Web-app plans are the scope of this comparison. API billing, self-hosted model licences and third-party models inside a design suite require their own checks; no web subscription entitlement is transferred to them by inference.
A download acceptance check you can run
- Write the destination: a private draft, a client advertisement, a store listing or a print file. Record who needs usage rights.
- Record the account plan, model and generation date before spending credits. Confirm whether the output will be public.
- Download through the product’s export control. Inspect the original file at 100%, including all four corners; do not use a screenshot of the preview.
- Check extension, actual pixel dimensions, transparency and compression. A renamed JPEG is not a PNG.
- Inspect available provenance information separately from visible marks. Record “not checked” when you have no suitable inspector.
- Review trademarks, people, reference-image rights and any stock elements. Save the relevant plan/terms reference alongside the file.
Proposed acceptance test only. We generated no images for this article and verified no downloaded image’s pixels or metadata. A failed step is a reason to change the plan or candidate before publishing.
Scope, exclusions and the next choice
This shortlist keeps a design-suite route, an explicitly restricted free export and a format-gated generator. Ideogram stays in the comparison as an unknown watermark case, not a clean-export recommendation. Leonardo and Midjourney were not added without sufficient current first-party evidence for the full export contract. Firefly appears only to explain provenance. ChatGPT/OpenAI image was not evaluated; no API-to-web assumptions were made.
Use the free image tools guide for allowance and workflow selection, the general generator guide for broader options, and the product-photo guide when preserving a real item is the main task. This page owns the final download and use decision.
Next step: write “format + pixels + intended use + privacy” as a four-field delivery requirement, then verify one candidate against it. Do not buy a larger credit bundle until that export contract fits.
