AI Video Generators Without Watermarks: Free and Paid Plans Compared

Compare Runway Standard, Pika credit packs and Pika Creator for clean video downloads, real generation costs and commercial-use conditions.

Checked October 5, 2026 · No hands-on generation test

The short answer: a free account is not a free finished video

We did not establish a reliable zero-cost route to a watermark-free, commercially licensed video among the plans reviewed. Runway has a genuine free generation allowance, but its free videos carry a watermark. Pika offers a no-subscription route funded by purchased credits; commercial work needs a different entitlement.

For a paid commercial starting point, compare Runway Standard with Pika Creator. For an occasional personal project, consider Pika's credit-pack route. These are three plan choices across two platforms, not a quality ranking. Luma is discussed separately because its older licensing guide and current product page do not fully establish the same offer.

Model settings decide how much video the money buys

Runway: budget for attempts, not just seconds

Gen-4.5 documentation lists web text-to-video and image-to-video, Standard or higher, 12 credits/second, 2–10 seconds and 720p output. At that documented rate, a five-second attempt costs 60 credits: 625 credits cover ten complete attempts, with 25 left. That is arithmetic, not ten usable shots. At the monthly plan price, allocating the entire allowance to those attempts implies $1.50 per attempt; rejected takes increase the cost per usable result.

Do not read 4K upscaling in a subscription feature list as native 4K generation. Different models and later processing can change cost and output. Confirm the active generation quote before spending credits.

Pika: compare the same model and settings

The pricing example is Wan 3.0, 720p, five seconds, 33 credits. Top-ups expire after 365 days. API, MCP, iOS and old.pika.art balances are separate. Starter costs $10 monthly ($8/month annually), includes 900 credits and no watermark, but excludes commercial licensing; it does not solve a client-delivery requirement. Current plan and credit rules.

Pika's Wan 3.0 guide supports text/reference workflows and an image-based Frames mode, with 480p, 720p and 1080p options and model-dependent lengths up to 30 seconds. The default Prime variant costs more than standard Wan 3.0. The 33-credit example must not be carried over to Prime, longer clips or different settings.

For a fair budget, write down the exact model, duration, resolution, audio setting and number of retries. Divide actual spend by clips you would publish. A cheaper attempted clip can be more expensive if it repeatedly misses your brief.

Which route fits your job?

A small commercial project: start by comparing Runway Standard

It is the lower listed monthly subscription of the two commercial routes in this table. It makes sense when the documented Gen-4.5 output and a tightly bounded shot list match your delivery. It is a poor fit if you need many retries on a small allowance or require unverified output capabilities. Try a representative shot before committing to a year; this review does not establish its visual quality for your brief.

Occasional personal work: consider Pika credits without a subscription

Separate a one-off experiment from an ongoing production schedule. This route is useful when recurring billing is the main concern. It is not the matching choice for a paid client asset, product advertisement or other work requiring a commercial license. A paid credit purchase does not by itself upgrade licensing.

Recurring commercial work: evaluate Pika Creator

Consider it when you specifically want Pika's model workflow and expect regular use. Compare usable results on the same brief before deciding that a larger credit number means better value: credits are not a shared currency across vendors. Do not buy it solely because a clean preview looks promising.

Why Luma is not an unconditional pick here

Luma's licensing guide, updated May 28, 2025, says Dream Machine Free/Lite generations are watermarked and personal-use only; Plus/Unlimited/Enterprise generations have commercial rights and no watermark. It also says upgrading does not retroactively remove the restrictions on older free generations.

On October 5, 2026, the current Luma product page instead presents Luma Agents with Plus, Pro and Ultra. Plus lists $30/month, $300 billed yearly and 10,000 credits with commercial use. The older Dream Machine pricing address redirects to this product. That is not enough to assume every current model and export inherits the old watermark rule.

If you already use Luma, confirm the selected model's download marking, exact output settings, generation cost and applicable plan terms before buying for this purpose. We have not verified those account-level conditions, so Luma stays outside the three confirmed plan routes above. No old Lite price is presented as a current offer.

Free account, free generation and commercial output are different

Free account
Registration has no subscription charge. Generating may still require a purchase.
Zero-cost generation
An actual grant covers an attempt. Runway's 125 free credits are one-time, not monthly, and its free outputs have a visible watermark. Free-plan rules.
Watermark-free commercial output
The download must meet both the marking condition and the platform's commercial-use terms. A clean frame alone proves neither a license nor ownership of everything depicted.

Runway's usage-rights page does not impose a non-commercial restriction, including on Free. Its Free watermark is therefore an export condition, not a blanket commercial-use ban. You still need rights to source images, faces, brands, footage and audio.

Before you spend, then before you publish

  1. Select the product, model and plan. Match web, API or mobile access to the entitlement you are buying. Save the dated terms for that route.
  2. Confirm the full cost. Check currency, taxes, monthly versus annual commitment, any trial end and renewal amount. Read the credit quote for the exact duration, resolution, audio and model variant.
  3. Generate a small authorized sample. Use material you own or may use. Reserve credits for failed takes and required processing.
  4. Download the actual file. Do not substitute a public share link, gallery preview or vendor demo for your deliverable.
  5. Inspect the file. Play the whole clip, inspect corners and end frames for visible branding, and verify dimensions, duration, audio and compression. Inspect the result after any editor export too.
  6. Check provenance and permissions. No visible logo does not mean no metadata, invisible provenance signal or disclosure obligation. Keep source permissions and applicable generation terms with the asset.

We did not verify the direct-share behavior of the current products. Pika's older FAQ discusses Basic/Standard/Pro/Fancy and distinguishes downloads from watermarked direct shares. Those names and rules conflict with the current Create table; they are not used to promise current Create sharing behavior. Check the downloaded file and any sharing route separately.

Questions before choosing

Is this a hands-on video-quality test?

No. This is an official-documentation comparison checked October 5, 2026. We did not generate or download test videos, measure speed, inspect output watermarks ourselves or rank visual quality. Listed entitlements are vendor claims, not independently observed output results.

Can I remove another creator's watermark instead?

This guide covers authorized generation and export settings. It is not a watermark-removal workflow for third-party footage.

Does an annual price mean I can pay that amount for one month?

No. The monthly equivalent spreads the annual commitment over twelve months. Use the separately listed monthly rate for a one-month comparison, and verify checkout before paying.
